Q1. What does ICT stand for and what does it refer to?

ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology. It refers to all the methods, tools and concepts related to storing, recording and sending digital information.

Q2. What is an Operating System? Name two operating systems used in laptops and desktops.

The Operating System (OS) is the most important software in a computer. It starts working as soon as we switch on the computer and displays the desktop on the monitor. Examples: Ubuntu, Microsoft Windows, Mac OS.

Q3. What is BIOS? What does it do when a computer starts?

BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. When the computer is switched on, BIOS automatically performs a self-test and, if the system is fine, loads the Operating System.

Q4. What are navigation keys? Give two examples.

Navigation keys are used to move around in a document. Examples include arrow keys, HOME, END, PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN.

Q5. What is a file extension? Give two examples.

A file extension identifies the type of a file and is separated from the file name by a dot. Examples are .txt for text files and .jpg for image files.

Q6. What is a folder?

A folder is a location where a group of files can be stored.

Q7. Write the shortcut keys for copy, paste, undo and save.

  • Copy: CTRL+C.
  • Paste: CTRL+V.
  • Undo: CTRL+Z.
  • Save: CTRL+S.

Q8. Why should we avoid eating or keeping drinks near a computer?

Crumbs can damage the internal parts of a keyboard, and any liquid spilt over an electronic device can spoil it beyond repair.

Q9. Explain what is meant by ‘Backup Data’.

Backing up data means saving the information present on a computer on another device, such as a CD/DVD drive or hard disk. Data can be recovered from the backup if the computer stops working completely.

Q10. What do you mean by ‘Encrypt Data’?

Encrypting data is a method of protecting important information from unauthorised access. The chapter explains that banks and companies can encrypt their entire hard disk. This requires a decryption password or key before the computer can be accessed.

A Firewall is a security measure that monitors the data coming into and going out of a computer and helps prevent viruses from entering the computer.

SPAM refers to unwanted emails from companies that advertise products or try to attract users to their websites.

Identity theft occurs when a hacker steals a person’s personal information and assumes their identity to access account information or perform illegal activities.

A Trojan Horse disguises itself as a useful software program. Once it reaches a computer, it behaves like a virus and can destroy data.

  • Check for the lock symbol.
