Food Chain
- A food chain is a natural cycle that shows the transfer of food and energy between different organisms.
Sustainable Development
- Sustainable development means development that benefits the economy while protecting the environment for the future.
- It focuses on using resources carefully without causing permanent harm to nature.
Important Sectors of a Green Economy
| Sector | Environmental Impact / Challenges | What Can We Do? |
| Agriculture | Provides food and supports the economy.Overuse of land damages the environment.Chemicals pollute soil, water, and air. | Promote organic farming.Grow vegetables at home.Choose local and seasonal food. |
| Energy Resources | Rising demand increases resource pressure.Fossil fuels are limited and non-renewable.Fossil fuels cause pollution and health issues. | Use renewable energy sources.Save electricity.Use public transport and cycles. |
| Construction | Uses natural resources and affects climate.Mining damages rivers and mountains.Poor designs waste energy and water. | Build green, energy-efficient buildings.Use solar and wind energy.Prefer local materials. |
| Fisheries | Overfishing reduces fish population.Species loss affects ecological balance.Threatens fishermen’s livelihood. | Follow sustainable fishing.Avoid breeding season fishing.Choose sustainable fish species. |
| Forestry | Forests support rainfall and wildlife.Deforestation causes climate change.Forest loss damages ecosystems. | Protect forests sustainably.Reduce and recycle paper.Avoid harmful wildlife products. |
| Tourism | Supports economy but can harm nature.Resource use increases pollution.Waste affects the environment. | Promote ecotourism.Save water and energy.Reduce travel waste. |
| Transport | Petrol and diesel cause air pollution.Vehicle emissions harm nature.More transport increases fuel use. | Use public transport.Walk or cycle more.Use electric vehicles. |
| Water Management | Lack of clean water affects people.Population growth increases water pressure.Pollution reduces water availability. | Use water wisely.Fix leaks quickly.Treat wastewater before disposal. |
| Waste Management | Improper disposal causes pollution.Wastes reusable resources.Affects land, air, and water quality. | Reduce, reuse, recycle waste.Separate waste properly.Compost organic waste. |
| Manufacturing Industry | Creates jobs and economic growth.Industries may cause pollution.Excess resource use harms nature. | Use cleaner production methods.Adopt clean energy.Make eco-friendly products. |
Session-2 Policies for a Green Economy
Policies for a Green Economy
- India has adopted Sustainable Development as a policy to achieve economic growth while protecting natural resources.
- Sustainable development aims to reduce poverty and social inequalities by providing equal opportunities for all communities and genders.

- GIM aims to protect, restore, and increase forest cover in India.
Policies for a Green Economy
Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (National Solar Mission)
- The National Solar Mission aims to meet India’s energy needs through sustainable sources.
- It focuses on making India a global leader in solar energy.
- Solar energy is a renewable source of energy and helps reduce dependence on coal and petroleum.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) / Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM)
- The mission aims to improve cleanliness in cities, towns, and villages across India.
- It focuses on creating a clean and hygienic environment.
- One of its major goals was to make India Open-Defecation Free by constructing toilets across the country.
National Green Tribunal (NGT)
- The National Green Tribunal works like a court for environmental protection cases.
