• There are four important skills of communication: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing (LSRW)

Active Listening

• Active Listening is listening with attention to comprehend s well as offer support and empathy to speaker.
• It improves job effectiveness, relationships, and problem-solving.

Factors affecting active listening

• 👀 Eye contact → It shows attention to the person speaking to you.
• 🤲 Gestures → It indicates to speaker that you are listing.
• 🚫 Avoid distractions → avoid things that distract you to listen attentively. Example – switch off mobile.
• 🗣️ Feedback → It is a positive or negative response given politely to the person communicating with you.

Stages of Active Listening

1. Receiving – Attentively listening.
2. Understanding – Agreement about something/someone
3. Remembering – Recall of information from past.
4. Evaluating – Judge value, quantity & importance of something/someone
5. Responding – saying or doing something in response

How to ensure Active Listening

1. Remove – eliminate distractions like reduce volume of TV
2. Eye Contact – look at speaker
3. Show – use gestures to ensure you are listening
4. Pay – pay attention and focus
5. Empathise – feel the emotion of speaker
6. Clarify doubts – ask questions to clear doubt
7. Tune – response when speaker finishes

Sentences & Phrases

• Sentence: Group of words that make complete meaning.
  • Example → Raju goes to school
• Phrase: Group of words that does not make complete meaning.
  • Example →Raju goes to school

• There are 15 punctuation marks or signs used.

Session 3: Writing Sentences

Simple sentence

• Simple sentence consists of one subject and one predicate or one finite verb. Example – Rahul sells a mobile.

Complex sentence

• A complex sentence has two or more coordinate clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction. Example – We went to school, and studied happily.

Objects

• Direct Object are the ones directly ‘acted on’ by verbs. A direct object answers the question “what?”
  • Example – In the sentence “Lokesh buys a mobile” if we ask “What does Lokesh buy?” the answer is “Mobile”.
• Indirect objects are the ones that receive the action of the verb indirectly. It answers the question “to whom/for whom?”
  • Example – In the sentence “Arjun bought a cycle for his brother”, if we ask “What did Arjun buy?” the answer is “cycle”.

Types of Sentences (Category-I)

• Active Sentence→ Subject performs action.
• Passive Sentence → Subject receives action.

• A paragraph is a group of sentences that share a common idea. Start a new paragraph when introducing a new idea.
• Example: Paragraph about School
  • 1st paragraph should include  details (name, location, size) of school.
